Best for: Creators who post mainly to Instagram Reels
Edits is Instagram's own video app. You sign in with your Instagram account, edit on your phone and export without a watermark, which makes it the natural starting point for anyone posting mainly Reels.
Edits was launched by Instagram to give creators a proper editing app built around Reels. It covers capture, editing and project management in one place, with high-quality exports and no branding added to your videos.
Download the app, log in with your existing Instagram account and start a project. You can record longer clips, trim and arrange them, add text and audio, and export straight to Reels. Projects are saved so you can come back to drafts.
Creators who post mostly to Instagram and want a free, simple workflow. It runs on phones only, and it has fewer advanced effects than CapCut.

Best for: Feature-rich editing with templates, captions and AI tools
CapCut packs the most features of any free editor: a huge template library, automatic captions and AI tools, on phone, desktop and in your browser. Pro starts at $14 a month.
CapCut has become the go-to editor for short-form video thanks to its templates and precise controls over cuts, speed, transitions and effects. Many of its features are free, and the paid plans add AI generation, premium templates and cloud storage.
Start from a template or a blank timeline, drop in your clips and let CapCut add captions and effects. You can switch between phone and desktop as a project grows. Some features vary by region, so check what's available where you live.
Creators who want trendy templates, accurate captions and fine control without learning professional software. Heavy AI users will want Pro.
Price from Free; Pro $14/month
Best for: Quick edits, trims and music on your phone
InShot is one of the easiest editors to pick up. Trimming, music, text and stickers take seconds, which suits quick Reels made on the go.
InShot has been a favorite phone editor for years because it keeps things simple. The tools you need for a typical Reel, such as cutting clips, adding music and placing text, are right on the main screen.
Import clips, trim and arrange them, then add music, captions and stickers. Most of its tools are free, and a Pro upgrade is sold as an in-app purchase, with the price shown only inside the app.
Beginners and busy small-business owners who want a Reel done in minutes. Anyone who wants detailed control will find VN or CapCut more capable.

Best for: Brands that make Reels alongside graphics and posts
Canva's video editor lives inside the same design suite many teams already use for posts and graphics, so Reels can share the same fonts, colors and templates.
Canva isn't a pure video editor, but for brands that's often a strength. You can build a Reel from a template, drop in your logo and brand colors, and keep it consistent with the rest of your feed without switching tools.
Pick a Reel-sized template or start blank, add clips, text and music, and download or schedule it. The free plan covers the basics; Pro unlocks brand kits, more templates and AI tools. Canva's pricing page shows the Pro price per year rather than per month.
Small businesses and teams who already design in Canva. If you edit lots of video, a dedicated editor gives more precise control.
Price from Free; Pro monthly price not published
Best for: Free multi-track editing with no watermark
VN gives you a proper multi-track timeline, templates and effects for free, without adding a watermark to your exports.
VN is the editor to choose if you want real control but don't want to pay. Its multi-track timeline lets you layer clips, text and audio precisely, and it doesn't stamp your videos with its logo.
Create a project, add clips to the timeline and layer in music, text and effects. Templates help you start faster. It takes a little longer to learn than InShot, but rewards you with much finer control.
Creators who edit regularly and want pro-style tools for free. If you need lots of AI features, CapCut offers more.

Reels are where new people discover accounts on Instagram. A clear hook in the first second, tight cuts and readable captions make the difference between someone watching to the end and scrolling past.
You don't need expensive software to get there. The five apps here cover everything from one-tap templates to multi-track timelines. Once your Reel is ready, our guide to posting more Reels explains how often to post and what to measure.
Instagram raised the maximum length for Reels to three minutes, up from 90 seconds.

Longer isn't automatically better. Short Reels are easier to watch to the end, which helps them reach more people. Use the extra time for tutorials or stories that genuinely need it.

A post can carry at most five hashtags now; add a sixth and Instagram won't publish the caption or comment.

With only five tags, each one has to count. Our round-up of hashtag generator tools helps you find specific tags your audience actually searches.
Posting at a steady rhythm matters more than posting a lot at once. Batch your edits on one day, then queue them with one of our scheduling tool picks.
Plan the hook. Decide what happens in the first second to stop the scroll.
Film in short clips. Short takes are easier to trim and rearrange.
Edit and caption. Cut out pauses, add on-screen text and check captions for mistakes.
Export without branding. Use an app or plan that doesn't add a watermark.
Post, then reply. Answer comments in the first hour so the Reel keeps getting shown.
Great Reels bring visitors, but growth still depends on reaching the right people. If you want help with that part, our Kicksta review explains how a growth service gets your profile seen by people likely to follow.
Most Reels that underperform don't have a quality problem. They have a pacing problem: the good part arrives too late, or the viewer can't tell what the video is about without sound.
Watch your Reel once with the sound off and once on a small phone screen before posting. If it still makes sense and the text is readable both times, it's ready.
If almost everything goes to Instagram, Instagram's own Edits app is the simplest path. If you also post to other platforms, a general editor like CapCut or VN travels better.
A watermark from another app can make your Reel look less polished. Edits and VN export without one for free; others remove it only on paid plans.
InShot and Canva are quickest to learn. VN and CapCut take longer but give much more control.
Many people watch with the sound off, so auto-captions save a lot of time. CapCut is strongest here.
If several people make content, a shared tool with brand fonts and colors, like Canva, keeps every Reel on-brand.
We started wide. We listed the tools people use most for this job, then dropped any that have shut down or no longer do what they claim.
We checked each tool's own site. Features, limits and monthly prices come straight from the company, on the date shown at the top.
We read what users say. App store and review-site feedback helped us spot problems the sales pages leave out.
We scored and ranked them. Each score reflects how well the tool does the job, how safe it is for your account, and what it costs.
Edits, Instagram's own app, is the best starting point for most Instagram creators because it's free and adds no watermark. CapCut is the most powerful free alternative.
Yes. Edits is free to download, you sign in with your Instagram account, and it exports without a watermark.
Edits and VN export without a watermark on their free versions. For the other apps, check the free plan before you export.
Up to three minutes. Shorter Reels are often watched to the end more often, so use the full length only when the content needs it.
Yes, with CapCut, Canva or VN, which all have desktop or web versions. Edits and InShot are phone apps.
Instagram now allows up to five. Choose specific tags that describe the Reel rather than broad, popular ones.
For simple Reels, often yes: you can trim clips, add music, text and stickers right inside the Instagram app. A separate editor is worth it when you want precise cuts, layered audio, auto-captions you can correct, or the same video for other platforms. Many creators film and edit in an app like Edits or CapCut, then add the final touches inside Instagram before posting.
